In a recent appearance on the “Hot Ones” hot wing interview show, John Stamos, renowned for his role as Uncle Jesse on “Full House” from the late 80s to the mid-90s, candidly admitted that he initially had unfavorable sentiments towards the show and even contemplated quitting.

He stated, “I hated that show,” and recollected how it was initially presented to him as being akin to “Bosom Buddies,” a short-lived 80s sitcom featuring Peter Scolari and Tom Hanks, but “with a couple of kids in the background.”

Stamos further reveals that during the show’s early production, he had a perception of being “the star” and carried a somewhat “big shot” attitude. However, when his young co-star, Jodie Sweetin, who portrayed Stephanie Tanner, stole the spotlight during the first table read, it bruised his ego.

He recounted the incident, saying, “Jodie Sweetin reads her lines, and people are roaring with laughter – I mean, they couldn’t stop laughing. I couldn’t even hear my own lines; they were laughing so hard at her, and I found myself sinking down in my seat.”

Eventually, with the guidance of his late co-star Bob Saget and a gentle push from his agent, Stamos made the decision to give the show a chance.

“I resisted it for a long time, but then I thought, ‘What am I doing?'” he shared. He came to realize that “Full House” was a beautiful show built on themes of sweetness and kindness. He recognized that the central character was love, and the show represented an ideal of a loving family – not a typical family, but a new normal.

“Full House” originally aired on ABC from 1987 to 1995. The sitcom revolved around Danny Tanner (played by Bob Saget), a widower raising his three daughters with the help of Stamos’s character, “Uncle Jesse” Katsopolis, and his friend Joey Gladstone (portrayed by Dave Coulier).

Stamos humorously confessed that he even attempted to get the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, fired from the show initially. Alongside Jodie Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure, they played the three Tanner daughters. Lori Loughlin played Stamos’s on-screen wife, Becky.

Stamos continued his involvement in the “Full House” universe with “Fuller House,” Netflix’s revival of the beloved series, which premiered in 2016 and ran for five seasons.
