Sherri Shepherd tributes 'The View' co-creator Bill Geddie: 'He absolutely changed my life'

Sherri Shepherd is fondly remembering her dear friend and mentor, Bill Geddie. During a recent appearance on the ABC talk show, she paid tribute to Geddie, whose passing was announced over the weekend. As one of the co-creators of “The View” alongside Barbara Walters and an executive producer of the show, Geddie played a significant role in Shepherd’s life.

She shared how Geddie’s impact was transformative in 2007 when he invited her to join “The View.” At that time, Shepherd was a single mother, recently divorced, and a stand-up comic with limited knowledge of politics. Despite this, Geddie believed in her ability to connect with the audience, and this opportunity changed her life.

Recalling her interactions with him, Shepherd noted that he pushed her, acknowledging his toughness. Under his guidance, she was encouraged to discover and assert her authentic voice in the television world.

In a lighthearted recollection, Shepherd reminisced about her early days on the show, where she made a comment about not being sure if the Earth was round or flat. She clarified that, of course, she knew it was round and attributed it to a “brain fart.” When she approached Bill Geddie with her concern about rectifying the statement, he reassured her by saying, “No, this is ratings, baby.” He advised her not to worry about constant apologies, emphasizing that the show’s name was “The View,” not “The Apology Show.”

The news of Bill Geddie’s passing was shared by “The View” on their Instagram account on Friday. Though the cause of death was not disclosed, the show expressed deep sadness over the loss of their dear friend and colleague. They acknowledged Geddie as a television pioneer, attributing him as the co-creator of “The View” alongside Barbara Walters and serving as its executive producer for an impressive 17 years. The show paid a heartfelt tribute, affirming that “The View” would not have come into existence without Bill Geddie’s significant contributions.

In addition to the show’s tribute, a statement from Geddie’s family was also included. They described him as not only a prominent figure in the television industry but also as an extraordinary husband and father who brought immense joy and presence to their lives.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on Friday, Shepherd expressed her profound devastation over Geddie’s passing. She emphasized the immense impact he had on her life, as he wholeheartedly believed in her and her abilities. Geddie’s belief in her potential empowered Shepherd to reach heights she had never imagined. Throughout the first season of the “#sherrishowtv,” she frequently sought his guidance and encouragement, recognizing him as a mentor, a remarkable leader, and a cherished friend. Her post concluded with a heartfelt declaration of love for Bill Geddie.
